New Evangelization needs lay-clergy teamwork – bishop By: cbcp news

MANILA, Aug. 20, 2015— A Catholic bishop has underscored the need for collaboration in advancing the mission of the New Evangelization in response to secularization.

Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani, Jr., said the clergy and the laity must work together in spreading the Good News in the modern world.

“Evangelization is the business of the whole Church. Clergy and laity alike, all are called to spread the Good News,” said Bacani over TV Maria’s “Know The Truth”.

“We have no excuse not to evangelize. This undertaking is not about ‘kami-kami’’ and ‘sila-sila,’ but ‘tayo-tayo’… each and everyone of us. And we have to work together and help each other to make this happen,” he said.

Bacani went on to decry an “exclusivist” mentality, as he called for a welcoming attitude which will open doors to like-minded people who may want to give their share in helping to bring God’s word to others, especially lapsed Catholics and the poor.

Besides using “new methods and new expressions”, the bishop believes another way would-be evangelizers can effectively do this is by witnessing.

“You can start by telling your stories, giving testimonies on how God has personally touched and transformed your lives,” he said.

Bacani warned, however, against the tendency of some testimonies becoming self-focused.

The prelate further highlighted the impact of presence that is not an empty, but one that mirrors Christ’s.

“This is fundamental to evangelization. An effective evangelizer is one who lives out the Gospel, and who reflects God’s word in his life.

“Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses,” he added. (Raymond Sebastian/CBCPNews)
